Petter Udland Johansen

Petter Udland Johansen was born in Oslo, Norway, where he received his first musical lessons in singing, violin and piano. He studied music at the Norwegian Academy of Music where he got his diploma in 1996. From 1997 until 2000 he studied early music at Schola cantorum Basiliensis with Richard Levitt as his teacher. Later he studied privately with the German tenor Hans Peter Blochwitz in Basel.

Petter Udland Johansen is a musician with a wide scope. He feels at home in classical music as well as in popular and folk music. He has worked with great success as a singer, conductor, composer/arranger and instrumentalist with ensembles like Hirundo Maris, Pechrima, Sagene Ring and Capella Antiqua Bambergensis and with them he is regularly giving concerts throughout the Europe and producing recordings with important labels like ECM Records, Carpe Diem Records, Ramée, CAP Records, Grappa and Muve Recordings.

In 2009, Arianna Savall and Petter Udland Johansen founded the group Hirundo Maris, specialising in early music from the Middle Ages to the Baroque, as well as presenting their own compositions. Their creative core is Mediterranean and Nordic music, the fruit of their extensive musical partnership. Like a migratory bird, they retrace the routes across seas and music that have linked Scandinavia with the Iberian Peninsula since time immemorial. Together with Erik Fosse and Per Martinsen Petter forms the trio Sagene Ring which has recorded three CDs for the Norwegian label Grappa, featuring their own music and texts about life on the eastern side of Oslo.

He was engaged as a singer, composer/arranger and instrumentalist for the project “Klang der Staufer” with Capella Antiqua Bambergensis with which he has played concerts all over Germany together with Arianna Savall. They also recorded the CD “In the Bleak Midwinter”, which stayed for 10 weeks among the top 10 on the Classical chart of the German music-retailer jpc.

Together with Arianna Savall he is musical director of the Fêtes médiévales de Saillon with more than 200 singers and instrumentalists and also together with Arianna Savall he has been an artistic director of Bardonecchia International Harp Festival in Italy since 2016.

Since 2007 Petter Udland Johansen gives regularly singing workshops in Austria (Handenberg), Switzerland  (Sion, Sallion), France (Dinard), Polen (Lanckorona) and Italy (Bardonecchia).
